LMIA guide
LMIA processing time: how long it really takes
LMIA processing time varies a lot by stream, and current high-wage and low-wage timelines run longer than past norms. Most Canadian employers should plan for several months from the day they first talk to us — consultation, then the required advertising period for your stream, then the Service Canada assessment — to the day a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment lands. After that, the worker still needs a permit.
LMIA processing time by stream
| Stream | Typical time* | Who it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Global Talent Stream | ~10 business days | Tech and in-demand specialized roles |
| High-wage stream | Varies — check current times | Wage at or above the provincial median |
| Low-wage stream | Varies — check current times | Wage below the provincial median; caps apply |
| Agricultural / SAWP | 10–20 weeks | Seasonal farm labour |
| Permanent residence (dual intent) | Varies | Supports a PR application |
* Times are typical ranges, not guarantees. Service Canada publishes current standards that shift with volume.
Step 1: consult first — is an LMIA even worth trying?
Before anyone advertises anything, we review the role, the business need, the local labour market, and the economic factors in your area. That up-front look tells us whether there is a realistic path forward, or whether you would be throwing time and money at a case that is unlikely to succeed.
Step 2: advertise before you can even apply
If the consultation shows a viable path, advertising is the make-or-break next step. You must post the position on the Government of Canada Job Bank plus use two other recruitment methods, all running for the required advertising period, which depends on the LMIA stream — generally about four weeks for high-wage and eight weeks for low-wage — before you can submit an LMIA application.
- Job Bank posting is mandatory.
- Two additional methods are required.
- The advertising period depends on the stream — roughly 4 weeks (high-wage) or 8 weeks (low-wage).
- Keep every applicant record and the reason they were not hired.
During that advertising period you discover whether a qualified Canadian or permanent resident is available. Only after that review do you know if there is any hope of moving forward with an LMIA.
How to keep your LMIA moving
- Match or beat the prevailing wage for your NOC code and region.
- Keep every job posting screenshot, application, and interview note.
- Answer the Service Canada officer's call the first time.
- Have business legitimacy documents ready before you file.
Common questions
How long does LMIA processing take in 2026?+
It depends on the stream. Global Talent Stream files are targeted at about 10 business days, while high-wage and low-wage LMIA applications currently take longer than past norms — check Service Canada's current times. You must also complete the required recruitment advertising period for your stream (generally about four weeks for high-wage, eight weeks for low-wage) before you can even apply.
Can LMIA processing be expedited?+
Yes, for certain categories: the Global Talent Stream, positions on a provincial in-demand occupation list, the highest-demand skilled trades, and highest-paid occupations qualify for the 10-business-day service standard.
Why is my LMIA taking longer than the posted time?+
The most common causes are an incomplete recruitment record, a wage below the prevailing rate, missing business legitimacy documents, or a missed officer call. A complete file up front is the single biggest factor in speed.
