LMIA cost: what employers actually pay

The headline LMIA cost is the $1,000 government processing fee per position, paid by the employer. On top of that, budget for job advertising and any provincial employer registration or compliance fee, plus professional fees if someone prepares the application for you. The worker's work permit and biometrics fees are separate and are normally paid by the worker — they are not part of the employer's LMIA cost.

What you cannot charge the worker

The $1,000 LMIA fee and recruitment costs must be paid by the employer. Recovering them from a temporary foreign worker is a compliance violation and can lead to penalties and a ban from the program.

Common questions

How much does an LMIA cost in Canada?+

The government LMIA application fee is $1,000 CAD per position requested. Employers hiring a caregiver for a family member with low income, and certain agricultural streams, may be exempt from the fee.

Can I make the worker pay the LMIA fee?+

No. It is illegal to recover the $1,000 LMIA processing fee from the temporary foreign worker. Employers must pay it themselves.

Is the LMIA fee refundable if I'm refused?+

No. The $1,000 fee covers the assessment itself and is not refunded on a negative decision, which is exactly why the recruitment record and wage need to be right the first time.

What other LMIA costs should I budget for?+

As the employer, budget for job advertising, any provincial employer registration or compliance fee, and professional fees if someone prepares the application for you. The worker's work permit fee and biometrics are separate and are normally paid by the worker.
